About our cause
Who are we? The Friends of Sawbridgeworth Neuro Centres (FSN) is a small charity dedicated to improving the lives of adults and young persons with severe and complex neurological conditions. We are based at the Jacobs Neuro Centre, home to up to100 residents, all unable to function independently at home. In most cases, brain/spinal injury arose either as a result of a traumatic event, such as a stroke, or accident, or resulted from the onset of a degenerative neurological condition, such as Parkinson’s Disease. In all cases, the injury has resulted in significant physical, cognitive, and/or communicative disability. The residents may stay for weeks, months or years, dependent on their needs and wishes.
The centre has a large team of Carers, Nurses, Therapists, Activities Coordinators and Supporting Staff. Together, they provide specialised care and therapy with the aim of maximising functional potential and quality of life, within a homely environment. This is no easy task. Quality of life is likely to mean something different for young men and women in their 20s and men and women in their 60s. To take one group to a football match or another to the opera is a major enterprise. To build wheelchair-accessible flower beds for those interested is costly but rewarding. Art and music are known to have a therapeutic effect on those with brain injuries, but the NHS cannot provide pictures for everyone’s room or music therapy for all – that’s where The Friends group comes in!
What are our objectives?
to organize and provide therapeutic activities, recreation and entertainment for the residents and their families
to improve the lives of residents who have no funds, family or friends to
support them, by the provision of clothing, hairdressing or other ‘nice to have’ personal items
to assist with the recruitment and organization of a group of volunteers who will work together with staff to help our residents to live life to the best of their ability
to enhance the physical environment, both inside and outside of the centres.
