About Us:

Courtyard Arts is a true community phenomenon.  Founded in a derelict stable block, its inspiration came from an enthusiastic group of local artists determined to enable all to have access to art in a friendly environment, whatever their age, circumstances or ability. Over 20 years on - and now bursting at its seams - our Centre is Hertford's leading visual arts venue, with a warm welcome guaranteed!

Why support us?

We have grown and blossomed over the years, but unfortunately our Centre has not. It is cramped, now showing its age and still remains somewhat of a hidden secret to the wider public. We are committed to creating a home for Courtyard Arts that is fit-for-purpose and that can meet the burgeoning demand for art within our community, one that does justice to the great things that we already achieve now and can potentially achieve in the future. We have made considerable inroads into raising essential funds to expand and redevelop but we now need to raise more to deliver a centre that we can truly be proud of.

We are really excited about the future of Courtyard Arts, the burgeoning art scene that we are central to, and the great opportunities that lie ahead - with your help we can make these a reality.

And we'll continue to always promise a friendly welcome and lovely homemade cakes! Thank you for your support!

About us

We offer a wide and ever-expanding range of creative classes and workshops for adults and children. Our classes – spanning ceramics, life drawing, stained glass, printmaking, painting, animation and more - are extremely popular and waiting lists can be long. In addition to hosting 35 classes at the Centre each week, we go out into the community delivering outreach projects to disadvantaged groups, the elderly and schools, alongside public art projects led by our committed members and volunteers.

Our gallery – along with the gallery we curate at Hertford Theatre - showcases a lively and diverse programme of exhibitions in all media from both established and emerging artists. Every year we offer an upcoming young artist the prestigious platform of a residency at the gallery to explore, develop and share her/his practise. We additionally give student groups (at HND, Foundation and Degree level) the invaluable experience of putting on professional exhibitions within our programme. Our small but impressive gift shop provides a further platform to showcase talent and support enterprising creativity, stocking cards and unique gifts sourced from local artists and makers.

We are very excited, too, to be developing partnerships with other venues. These curated collections allow us to introduce the talents of local artists to whole new audiences.

Courtyard Arts is a self-funded charity with a small team of part-time staff supported by an army of volunteers and a dedicated membership. We would not be able to open our doors and offer such a wonderful array of activities without the support and dedication of our volunteers. Likewise, we aim to provide our volunteers with valuable enriching experiences and support in their personal development. We like to think that we help people to break through their boundaries, both personally and creatively, changing lives and providing an invaluable service to the community.

Thank you for your support!
